How to Build a Wooden Corral Gate

    • 1). Measure the width, height and length of the space in the corral where you will hang the gate. Standard gate widths range from 10 feet to 16 feet. When you buy wood for the rest of the corral, buy 2-by-6 inch pieces of treated lumber in these measurements to use for the gate rails and panels.

    • 2). Build the rails that will act as a frame for your gate. Cut two pieces of wood for the length of the gate, and two for the height. Lay all four pieces on the ground, arranged in the rectangular shape of your gate. Nail them together with four 3-inch nails on each end of each rail, two on the top and two on the underside.

    • 3). Build the panels of the gate, which will fill the center of your gate. Cut strips of wood in the same width and length you measured in Step 2. Lay the panels side by side vertically on the rail frame you built in Step 3. Hammer in four nails on the top and bottom of each strip, to attach it to the rail frame.

    • 4). Attach two metal hinges to one side of the gate assembly you built in Step 4. Hammer in nails to secure the hinges to the gate post. Attach the latch post to the other side of the gate, and screw in two 1/2-inch screw eyes and two 1/2-inch pintel screws to secure it. Ask two friends to lift the gate and hold it in position for you while you attach the metal hinges to the hinge post. Screw in two 1/2-inch screw eyes and two 1/2-inch pintel screws to secure it.
