How to Troubleshoot a Frigidaire Refrigerator Model FRT21IL5DBP

104 19

    Not Running/Not Cooling

    • 1). Make sure the refrigerator is plugged in and that the fuses/circuit breakers are operational. Make sure the fuse is a 15-amp time delay fuse. Turn the control setting to "O".

    • 2). Check the load inside the cabinet -- a full refrigerator cools better than an empty one. Look inside the freezer. If there's a heavy frost buildup, unplug the refrigerator until the freezer is completely defrosted. Turn the unit back on. If it still does not cool, contact a repair center to have your coolant levels checked.

    • 3). Remove the service panel inside the freezer if your refrigerator cools properly after manual defrost. Locate the automatic defrost assembly, which includes a timer, a heater and a thermostat. Replace this assembly and plug the unit back in.

    • 4). Remove the kick panel from the bottom front of the fridge and use a vacuum to remove dirt and dust from the condenser coils. If the unit still does not cool, contact a service center.

    Noisy

    • 1). Unplug the refrigerator and move it completely out of its spot. Check the floor for buckling or sagging, and place a piece of plywood under the unit for extra stability. Unscrew the front feet of the fridge to make it completely level from front to back and side to side.

    • 2). Open the freezer door and locate the fan on the back wall. If the noise is coming from there, it must be replaced.

    • 3). Locate the compressor on the back of the refrigerator. It is a black box about 6 inches wide, with tubes and wires coming out. If the noise is coming from there, it must be replaced.

    • 4). Locate the condenser fan panel on the back of the fridge. It should be a thin, slightly raised panel. If the noise is coming from there, remove the panel and vacuum the fan assembly free of all buildup. If the noise continues, replace the assembly.

    • 5). Check the drip pan underneath the unit. If it is rattling and doesn't sit securely, it may have warped and should be replaced. Alternatively, try using duct tape to secure it.

    Leaks

    • 1). Unplug the fridge and check the back of the unit for a loose water inlet hose. Tighten as necessary, or replace the water inlet valve. Also check the drip pan underneath the fridge to make sure it is not cracked or overflowing.

    • 2). Remove the bottom shelves or drawers from the cabinet and locate the drain. Remove any debris or clogs by hand.

    • 3). Contact a service center if the leaking continues, as the evaporator drain may be clogged, and the insulation between the refrigerator and freezer cabinets may have to be replaced. This is a big, complicated job that requires special training.
