Gazing at the clouds is an ideal way to spend a summer day. Even if the weather doesn't cooperate for a lazy day of cloud watching, art projects with the cloud theme can keep kids entertained. Cloud art projects incorporate elements of creativity and science, resulting in masterpieces from the children. - Let the kids make their own cloudy sky scene with a sponge. Start with a large piece of light blue paper as the base of the art project. Use white tempera paint and a sponge. Gather several different types of sponges so the kids can experiment with them. Each sponge will make a slightly different look. Provide pictures of real clouds for inspiration, but encourage the kids to be creative when sponge painting their clouds.
- Cotton balls offer a fluffy material for making the cloud art stand off of the paper. Plain white glue works well to hold the cotton balls onto paper. One option for this cloud art project is to cut out a large cloud shape for each child. The kids glue cotton balls on to cover the cloud shape. Stretching the cotton balls slightly spreads them out and makes them blend together better. Another option is to provide a large piece of blue paper and let the kids make their own cloud shapes with the cotton balls.
- This art project lets the kids create a textured cloud picture. Mix together some foam shaving cream with white glue. Adding the glue makes a thick mixture that holds its shape. You can also add a drop of black paint to turn the mixture gray for rain clouds. The kids spread the shaving cream mixture onto a piece of paper to create cloud shapes. The shaving cream mixture will harden and leave behind textured clouds on the picture.
- This art project works well as a room decoration suspended from the ceiling. Cut out two identical cloud shapes. Paint the cloud cutouts. Staple the two cloud cutouts together, but leave a small opening. Stuff the cloud with bunches of newspaper or tissue paper until it's a fluffy cloud. Continue stapling the gap closed to hold everything inside. Turn it into a rain cloud by cutting out raindrops from blue paper and hanging them from the cloud with string.
