How to Clone Vegetable Plants
- 1). Selects a plant you wish to clone. Take the cutting in the spring or summer when the plant is actively growing.
- 2). Cut a section of the plant's stem about 3 to 6 inches long with a knife or razor blade. Make sure the cutting includes between two to six nodes, bumps of the stem where the leaf emerges. Ensure that the stem contains leaves. Remove any excess leaves so that only two or three remain. Remove any flowers.
- 3). Place the planting medium into a container. Generously moisten the soil. Make a hole in the planting soil 1 to 3 inches deep. Place the cutting in the hole. Press soil around the base of the cutting with your finger.
- 4). Water the cutting with a light mist. Put a clear plastic bag over the container to keep high humidity. Place the plant where it will receive light. Avoid placing in direct sunlight.
- 5). Wait one to two weeks for plant to take root. The exact amount of time to take root depends on the vegetable species.
