How to Install Weed-Free Pavers

    • 1). Determine the size of the area to be paved. Add six inches to each side. Insert stakes and tie string around stakes. This is the area to be excavated.

    • 2). Dig down eight to ten inches throughout the entire area, keeping as level as possible. Line the area with landscape fabric and fill with crushed stone or gravel to a depth of six inches. This base layer is the first defense against weeds.

    • 3). Add two inches of concrete sand to the area and smooth it with a spare piece of 2-by-4. Get the entire area smooth and ready for pavers.

    • 4). Lay the first run of pavers along one edge. This is known as the soldier course and it is what the rest of the paved area is built from. Use the level to ensure the run is straight and true. Continue to lay pavers, checking for true as needed. If a paver needs to be cut, mark the size and use a masonry saw to cut it.

    • 5). Install the restraining edge along the outside of the paved area. Use a hammer to get the spikes completely in the ground.

    • 6). Use the power tamper on the paved area. Doing this embeds the pavers into the sand and bedding below them. It also evens out the top surface of the pavers.

    • 7). Spread play sand over the paved area and use the power tamper again. Repeat this process until all the cracks between the pavers are filled. This sand is what locks the pavers into place. Use the push broom to sweep excess sand away.
