How to Sew Kitchen Chair Covers
- 1). Measure the top of the chair from side to side and from top to seat. Add 1 inch to each measurement for seam allowances.
- 2). Purchase enough fabric to cut two pieces according to your measurements.
- 3). With the right sides of the fabric together, sew the side seams and the top seam. Clip the corners diagnoally to reduce bulk.
- 4). Turn the cover right-side out. Press under 1/4 inch on the bottom edge, then press under 1/4 inch again. Sew the hem.
- 1). Measure the chair seat in both directions. Add 1 inch for a seam allowance. Measure the distance from the seat to the floor and add 1 inch. Measure the distance around the seat, starting and ending at the same point. For a gathered skirt, double the circumference measurement. Add 2 inches for seam allowances.
- 2). Purchase enough fabric to cut the two pieces according to your measurements.
- 3). Cut a piece of fabric according to the chair-seat measurements. Cut another piece according to the measurements of the length and circumference of the seat, then cut off 1/4 of that piece.
- 4). Sew the side seams and hem on both skirt pieces.
- 5). Gather the fabric for a gathered skirt. On both skirt pieces, sew a long basting stitch along the width of the fabric near the top, leaving long tails at the beginning and end. Pull on the tails to gather the fabric. Adjust the 3/4-width piece to fit the sides and front of the chair, and the 1/4-width piece to fit the back. Pin the gathers in place, then sew over the basting stitches.
- 6). Sew the 3/4-width skirt piece to the seat piece, starting at the corner on one side, working around the front and across the other side. Sew the 1/4-width skirt piece to the back of the seat piece.
