PROVO, Utah — A contender in the Miss Utah pageant in June, Miss Provo Sasha Heaps has joined with Supersonic Car Wash in a week-long fundraiser to boost the awareness of breast cancer prevention and cure just before Mother's Day.

To compete in the Miss Utah competition Heaps must put in at least 20 hours in charitable assistance for her platform, which is breast cancer awareness. Utah is one of the lowest states in the nation in the number of women who get breast cancer screening, according to Provo radiologist Dr. Wendell Gibby.

"Just working with the Susan G. Komen organization I see the power of women coming together and supporting one another. I've already exceeded the required 20 hours because I believe in the cause," Heaps said.

Dubbed the "Wash for the Cure," the event runs from May 2 to May 10 at the Utah County car wash locations, 367 N. State, Orem and 1625 N. Freedom Blvd., Provo where folks may select from a variety of car wash and detailing packages and other items. Supersonic is donating $3,000 to the Utah affiliate of the Susan G. Komen organization on Heaps' behalf, rather than just a portion of the proceeds, while also providing a venue for the event to further her success.

"The fundraiser is named ‘Wash for the Cure' because that's exactly what it's all about — finding a cure for breast cancer," Heaps said.

The car wash business will also make arrangements for customers to donate for the cure if they want to, he said, while providing a venue for educating folks about breast cancer and its impact on families. The organization's official color, pink, will be prevalent in what is designed as a fun activity.

Heaps as Miss Provo will rotate between the company's two car wash locations during the fundraiser to meet the public. Beauty queen royalty from neighboring cities will join her from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.  They will pass out pamphlets on breast cancer awareness. Children who come with their parents will be treated with pink balloons as their parents receive information on breast cancer awareness.

"Breast cancer awareness is close to my heart," Heaps said. "One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime."

The Miss Utah Pageant is held during the week of June 16-21 at the Capitol Theater in Salt Lake City.

Susan G. Komen organization was started in 1982 and is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since its inception. Seventy-five percent of the net income of the Utah affiliate stays in Utah. The remaining 25 percent goes to the national Susan G. Komen Grants Program for research. More than $2 million in national research has been awarded to the Huntsman Cancer Institute since 1997, including three Komen grants totaling more than $500,000 that are currently underway.
