How to Make Machine Embroidery Lace Doilies

    • 1). Thread the needle and the bobbin after you've programmed the desired pattern into the embroidery machine. Use the same type of thread in both areas, whether it's polyester, cotton, or metallic thread.

    • 2). Use the hoop attachment from the embroidery machine to secure from one to four layers of the water-soluble stabilizer tightly into the hoop so they don't slip, and insert the hoop into the machine. The stabilizer sheets, which keep the embroidery firm, will later be dissolved in water, leaving only the embroidered lace.

    • 3). Begin stitching on the stabilizer pieces following the programmed pattern, taking care to trim any sewing tails close to each piece. The stabilizer can either be rinsed off each piece and allowed to dry, or ironed off. Otherwise, the embroidery can be left on the stabilizer until the entire piece is finished and rinsed.

    • 4). Pin or hand-stitch the embroidered lace pieces in the desired pattern to the fabric for the middle of the doily, leaving a 1-inch border of fabric on the inner edge of the lace. This will later be trimmed.

    • 5). Using the machine, stitch over the inside edge of the lace using a zig-zag stitch. Do this at least three or four times to ensure the fabric and lace are well attached. Any excess fabric may now be carefully cut away from the new doily.
