Hook Worms in the Yard
- Animal feces can contain hookworm eggs, which get into warm, moist soil and hatch. Pick up all animal feces from the yard. Put up a fence to keep all stray and wild animals out.
- Three cups of bleach in a gallon of water or borax in water sprayed onto the yard will kill hookworm eggs. Unfortunately, it will also kill any plants.
- Eggs and larvae can only survive in warm temperatures and in damp soil. Cold can kill larvae, so there is no need to treat the yard in winter.
- When pets are undergoing hookworm treatment, or if the yard is frequented by wild animals, it is possible that hookworm larvae have been deposited in the yard through pet droppings. Avoid walking barefoot in the yard whenever possible.
