Regular Riding Mowers Vs. Zero Turn
- Zero turn mower
A regular riding lawn mower has the engine in the front of the deck and is rear-wheel drive. The transmission turns the back wheels to push the lawn mower forward and it is steered with the front wheels. A zero turn mower's engine is in the rear and this gives you an unobstructed view of the cutting path in front of you. Each rear wheel connects to a transmission and the pressure of the fluid creates wheel motion individually in each wheel to create individual rear wheel steering. - A regular riding mower steers just like a car--with a steering wheel--but the zero turn mower uses levers to steer. The engine's rotational force turns a pulley-operated pump that pressurizes the transmission fluid. Movements of the levers control the speed and direction that you travel. Maximum lever movement means maximum fluid flow, which translates into a rapidly turning wheel. When both wheels turn at the same speed, you follow a straight path. When one wheel stops and the other turns, you will pivot in a circle. This enable you to turn around 180 degrees within your own footprint.
- Riding mowers and zero turn mowers are both available in many sizes. The typical range of deck sizes on a riding mower is from 38 to 46 inches and the zero turn boasts larger decks from 36 to 72 inches. Riding mower engines range from 12.5 to 21 hp and zero turn mowers are available in 18 to 26 hp models.
- A zero turn mower will help you complete the task of mowing your yard much quicker than a traditional riding mower. The larger deck size will cut a wider path, so it takes less time. A larger engine will propel you faster and save time. The agility of the zero turn mower will enable you to cut very close to trees shrubs and other items in your yard and may even eliminate the need to use a string trimmer for trimming around those items.
- A zero turn mower is a bit more expensive than a riding mower but it is a time-saving creation. You can use the time you save on lawn maintenance for family time or doing other things that you enjoy. When choosing a lawn mower of either type, keep in mind that a larger engine is beneficial if you have hilly areas to mow or sandy soil, so that the lawn mower does not bog down in these situations.
