How to Paint on Velvet
- 1). Cut the Masonite or Upson board to desired size with the saw and, using fabric scissors, cut the velvet to fit the board.
- 2). Apply the glue to the board and place the velvet on the board, using the rolling pin to remove air bubbles and wrinkles and create a smooth surface.
- 3). Hold the velvet-covered board out in front of you, rotating it until no sheen is observed and a soft, lustrous finish is visible. This is the way you will position your subject upon the velvet so that the grain is going with you, not against you, as you paint.
- 4). Use the chalk to trace out your design. Using a narrow brush and white paint, lightly follow your design.
- 5). Paint your picture, using short brush strokes and plenty of paint. Try to finish in one sitting; frame it when thoroughly dry.
