How to Type on the iPhone
- 1). Open any application that allows you to access the iPhone's digital keyboard. This would include "Notes," "Safari," "Mail" or "Messages," among others. To open an application, tap the icon once with your finger.
- 2). Create a new text item on which you can begin typing. For example, if you are using the Messages app, click the "New Message" box in the upper-right corner of your screen. If using Mail, select your mailbox and click the "New Message" box in the lower right corner. If using Notes, click the "+" button in the upper right corner to create a new note.
- 3). Tap the part of the screen where you want to enter text if you do not already see a virtual keyboard. For example, if using Safari, you will need to tap either the URL box on the upper-left side of the screen (to enter a web address), or the Google box on the upper-right side of the screen (to enter search terms).
- 4). Tap the letters on the virtual keyboard to enter text. By default, your iPhone should automatically capitalize the first letter in a sentence, but you can capitalize any letter by tapping the "Up" arrow just to the left of the "Z" key. If you make a mistake, delete it by tapping the "Left" arrow just to the right of the "M" key.
- 5). Click the button that reads ".?123" in the lower left corner of your virtual keyboard to access your numbers and symbols. If you do not see the symbol you want, click the gray button that reads "#+=" to see additional symbols.
- 6). Click the gray "ABC" button to return to your letters.
- 7). Click the gray button in the lower right corner of your screen to enter your command and/or close your virtual keyboard. For example, if entering a search phrase, the gray button will read "Google" or "Search." If entering a note, the button will read "Return." If entering a web address, the button will read "Go."
- 8). Press the blue "Cancel" button in the upper right corner to close out your keyboard without entering a command.
