Summer flowers arrive in an abundance of colors. Even if you prefer one color in your garden, you are likely to have a variety of shades within that color family. If you enjoy pink blossoms, quite a few different summer flowering plants will cover your garden in soft shades of pink or more vibrant pink tones. - Foxglove blooms in June and July with large, tube-shaped flowers lining a woody stem. Foxglove stems can grow as tall as 3 feet. The stems also hold thick leaves that grow in pairs up the length, growing smaller as they approach the flowers. The leaves lowest on the stalk tend to wither by the time blooms appear. Foxgloves like sun, but they can tolerate partial shade. Foxgloves attract butterflies, moths and hummingbirds.
- Sweet pea grows as a shrub, with paired leaves and flashy flowers. The blooms cluster toward the end of the shrub's branches. The flowers are double-lipped, with a longer lower lip. The leaves are large and hairy, and the stems have stiff hairs as well. Sweet pea prefers moist soil and full sun. Sweet pea is frequently used for erosion control, as its complex root system helps to stabilize soil.
- Queen of the prairie can grow as large as 5 or 6 feet tall. The plant has lobed, deep green leaves and clusters of flowers. The blooms are tiny and highly fragrant. Up close, the flower clusters appear fuzzy because of all the stamens from the blossoms. Queen of the prairie prefers partial shade and moist soil, but can tolerate dry soil. Queen of the prairie is very attractive to butterflies.
- Hollyhocks can reach heights of 6 feet tall in optimal conditions. When they do not have as much moisture as they normally like, they generally only reach around 3 feet tall. Hollyhock has showy flowers and heart-shaped leaves. The plant prefers partial shade and moist soil. If you have a hollyhock, be careful of the berries, because they are toxic to humans.
- Checkerblooms have fleshy, dark green leaves and tall spikes that flower. The plant can reach 3 feet tall, and the spikes alone can reach 2 feet high. The pink flowers open fully in the morning, then close tightly in the evening. Checkerblooms prefer partial shade and moist soil.
