How to Make a Heely Grind Plate
- 1). Find a dense and smooth plastic material. Test how well the material slides by rubbing it along the edge of a hard surface while applying some pressure. The less friction you feel, the better the material will work as a grind plate.
- 2). Place the shoe on the grinding plate material and trace the sole so that the plate will fit seamlessly under the width of the shoe. Once the shoe is traced, make lines across the shoe that mark how long the plate will be. Generally, the plate should cover the middle third of the sole, under the arch of the foot.
- 3). Cut out the grinding plate design with a hacksaw to create a rough plate. Create a more precise shape using the bench grinder.
- 4). Use the bench grinder to carve out an arc in the middle of the plate, so that it can better lock on to the desired edge. Smooth out the arc with the belt sander.
- 5). Test out the plate by duct taping it into its space on the shoe and jumping onto low edges to make sure it does not bend or crack. Fix the plate permanently by lathering the space for the plate on the shoe with a strong and thick glue. Clamp it into a vice or put the shoe under something heavy for as long as the glue needs to dry.
