Many home owners are not DIY experts or even enthusiasts and so they require professionals to carry out work on their house.
This might be a builder, a roofer, a plumber or an electrician among others.
When you let someone into your home, you want to feel that they are reliable, professional and fully qualified, however you cannot always be guaranteed this.
There are the so called cowboys or rogue traders who cost the public thousands of pounds every year for unfinished work or work that is so poorly finished it needs redoing.
There are even con artists who will claim to trades people, come into your home and steal from right under your nose! Home owners want and try to avoid these rogues at all costs but how can you make sure that you hire a professional and qualified electrician? There are a few tips you can follow so that you are more likely to get a reliable, qualified and good value electrician who is not going to rip you off or leave your home unsafe.
The most important thing to remember is to listen to your gut instinct.
If you do not trust the electrician when you speak to them on the phone or when they come round to your house to give you a quote, do not let them work in your home.
But what are the tips that you should be following? Look for Customer Reviews Customer reviews are one of the best ways to spot a rogue trader from a reliable tradesman, however, not the ones that are listed on the websites of the electrician as it is possible that they have made them up themselves or doctored them to be more complimentary.
There are websites you can use to find real reviews from real customers such as rated people.
Check their Website Do a quick search for electricians Bradford or Newcastle electrician and you will be presented with a list of your local sparkies.
You can then click onto their websites to check that they have the right qualifications and to see if they do the work that you need.
Some badges of professionalism include the NICEIC or National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting.
Ask for Referrals Amongst your friends, neighbours, colleagues and acquaintances there will probably be a handful of people if not more (depending on how popular you are) who have used a local electrician.
The best way to gage the professionalism, prices and reliability of a local sparky is to ask them for their referrals.
Very few people, let alone a true friend, will pass on the details of an electrician who has left their house unsafe, done a bad job or ripped them off.
So if you want to avoid the cowboys and go straight to the certified electricians in your area, use these tips and make sure that you are happy with the person you choose.
