Hybrid Coconut Trees
- The MayJam Dwarf is a cross between the Malayan Dwarf and the Jamaica Tall coconut trees. This hybrid is fast-growing. The green or red coconuts are small and round.
- The MayPan Dwarf is a hybrid of the Malayan Dwarf and Panama (also known as Pacific) Tall varieties. It produces coconuts prolifically by the time it is 3 years old. The coconuts are green. This tree grows throughout South Florida. Originally, scientists thought the MayPan hybrid was immune to lethal yellowing, which wiped out the coconut palms in Florida, but it is only slightly more resistant to the disease.
- Chandra Sankara and Kera Sankara are Indian hybrids that produce more than 210 coconuts per year. Farmers grow these hybrids for cooking oil, as the oil content of the copra is greater than 68 percent. Copra is the white flesh of the coconut.
