How to Plant a Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae

    • 1). Water the seedling well and place it in the shade, so that it does not dry out, until you are ready to plant your arborvitae. Thuja Green Giant does well when planted at any time of the year.

    • 2). Measure the seedling from bottom of the trunk to the top of the tree. Measure the roots, ensuring that they are equally as long as the rest of the tree and prune away any excess. If the top measures 24 inches, then the roots need to measure 24 inches. Lay the roots on an old board and cut across the roots with a sharp knife.

    • 3). Open a trench with a straight-edged shovel by pushing the shovel in the ground as far as it will go and working the handle backward and forward. It needs to be as deep as the root length. Remove the shovel from the trench.

    • 4). Gather the roots together and push them into the trench without bending the roots back up towards the surface. If the roots point upwards, they can grow out of the soil and run along the surface.

    • 5). Fill the trench with water and wait about 15 minutes for some of it to absorb. Close the trench by pushing the soil together with your feet while you hold the Green Giant straight. Plant your other Thuja Green Giant trees 15 feet apart. Fertilize in the winter and midsummer.
