How to Crochet and Embellish Socks
- 1). Using crochet hook size F, chain 11. Single crochet in second chain and in each across. Continue around, single crocheting in the back side of the chains as well, for a total of 20 stitches. Single crochet in first single crochet and place a marker. Single crochet twice in the next stitch, and once in each of the next seven stitches.
- 2). Single crochet twice in next stitch and once in the next and place second marker. Repeat to first marker. Single crochet around, increasing on each side each marker. Repeat these two rows four times. This is the toe of the sock.
- 3). Use the extended single crochet stitch for the body of the foot. This stitch is performed by yarning over twice during a single crochet, then pulling the hook through one loop, yarning over again and pulling it through the second two loops. Use the extended single crochet in each stitch around until the sock foot measures 2 1/2 inches shorter than the desired foot length. This is the measurement from the front of the heel to the toe.
- 4). Fold the sock in half across the toe. Mark the center stitch on the top of the sock. Use two unique markers and mark the stitches nine over from the center in each direction. Use the extended single crochet stitch around, increasing on either side of all three marked stitches. Extended single crochet in each stitch around. Repeat these two rows four times, ending at the center marker. This is the heel gusset.
- 5). Turn the sock heel by single crocheting in the center marked stitch of the gusset and each of the next 14 stitches. Mark this stitch. Single crochet in next stitch, single crochet twice in the next stitch and once in the next. Mark this stitch. Slip stitch in next stitch and turn.
- 6). Chain one and single crochet in the next stitch. Single crochet twice in the next stitch and once in the next three. Single crochet twice in the next stitch, single crochet in the marked stitch and slip stitch in the following stitch. Turn. Chain one and single crochet in the next stitch. Single crochet twice in the next four stitches. Single crochet in the next, then single crochet twice in the next two stitches. Repeat to the marked stitch. Single crochet in the marked stitch, slip stitch in the next and turn.
- 7). Chain one and single crochet in first stitch. Single crochet twice in the next two stitches, and single crochet in the next three. Single crochet in the next, and once in the next four stitches. Single crochet twice in the next two stitches, once in the marked stitch, then slip stitch and turn. The heel is now turned.
- 8). Form the sock's heel by chaining one and single crocheting in each stitch across to the next marker. Slip stitch and turn. Continue this pattern until there are 40 stitches around the ankle opening of the sock.
- 9). Work the ankle of the sock in rounds. Extended single crochet in each stitch around. Continue until the ankle of the sock is 1 inch shorter than the desired calf length.
- 10
Use an E hook to form the cuff of the sock. Double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch in first double crochet. Double crochet in the front loop of the first double crochet stitch and the back loop of the second double crochet stitch. Repeat this pattern around. Slip stitch in the first double crochet. Repeat this row. The alternating double crochet stitches will form a ribbing. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Make a second sock. - 1). Use an F hook to crochet 6 and slip stitch to form a ring. Leave a 6-inch tail of yarn at the start of the ring. Chain 1 and crochet 15 single stitches in the center of the ring. Slip stitch to first single crochet to join. Close the ring with a slip stitch.
- 2). Chain one and single crochet in first single crochet stitch. Chain three, skip two stitches and single crochet in the third. Repeat around and slip stitch to join. Slip stitch in the first chain three space. Single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet three times followed by a second half-double and single crochet stitch in each chain 3 space around. This forms 5 petals. Slip stitch to join.
- 3). Chain 4 and skip the next 6 stitches, then slip stitch in next single crochet. Repeat around. Slip stitch in first chain 4 space and chain one, then form a petal in each of the chain 4 spaces around, replacing the center double crochet with a treble crochet. Repeat these rows, making chain 5 spaces and skipping 8 stitches around. Replace the center double crochet in the third round of petals with two treble crochet stitches. Slip stitch to join and tie off, leaving a long tail.
- 4). Thread the tail onto a darning needle and use the excess yarn to sew the crocheted flower onto the sock as embellishment. Make a second flower for the other sock.
