How to Harvest Sod

104 14
    • 1). Water the sod one week prior to harvest. This should be a thorough watering to ensure that the roots get enough water. You will need to let the sod sit for one week before harvesting it. This is due to the fact that excess water will weigh down the soil, making it harder to move and transport the sod pieces.

    • 2). Apply pesticides if necessary. If the sod is going to an entirely new location, it is important to make sure that any pests do not travel with it. If you are simply moving some sod from one area of your property to another, you do not need to treat it. Follow the label directions on your pesticide.

    • 3). Mark out exactly how much sod will need to be cut. Plan out the area where you will be harvesting the sod, and block out the area with wooden stakes. This will give you a visual guideline of where to cut and make the sod easier to harvest.

    • 4). Begin cutting the sod. Using a sod cutter --- you can rent one of these machines from local gardening supply stores or landscapers --- slowly cut the sod from the ground. You will need to decide how deep to go with your cutter. A few inches is common and typically the best height. Too shallow a cut may damage the root system, and too deep a cut may make the sod pieces too heavy to manage.

    • 5). Stack the sod pieces on wooden pallets. This will make it easier to move the pieces, particularly if you are doing a large job. Layer damp canvas between pieces, and cover the top with damp canvas as well. This will help the sod retain some moisture and minimize the amount of shock to the sod as it is moved. It is now ready to transport and be installed at its new location.
