Fraudsters Con Single Mum In Ppi Scam - Choosing The Right Ppi Refund Company
Amanda Slater, 42, from Drylaw, northwest of Edinburgh in Scotland received a phone call from a man who referred to himself as Ron at 10am on 28 March. He claimed to be a PPI refund agent, who said she was owed 2,170 in PPI compensation.
Ms Slater had seen advertisements on television about how to reclaim PPI and the man who phoned was aware she had an Argos card and also knew the number of it - he convinced her that the PPI refund was related to that.
He advised her that his colleague - whom he referred to as Catherine Cox - would be bringing the full amount in cash round to her house at 3pm that afternoon.
When the man's colleague did not turn up at the house at 3pm, Ms Slater phoned the fake PPI compensation agent back and he then requested that she go to the local shop and buy 110-worth of Ukash vouchers to pay a fee on the PPI refund owed to her. Ukash vouchers can be bought in local shops and are used to buy goods and services online.
"I thought it was awful strange - and I dont know why I agreed - but I went to the shop and got them and called back," said Ms Slater.
"He took the codes from the vouchers and then put me through to a woman who said she was this Catherine - she said she was in my area and would be round shortly with the money."
Later Ms Slater received another call and this time the fraudster advised her that 200 in Ukash vouchers were need to pay tax on the PPI reclaim monies.
Ms Slater again went to buy the voucher and phoned the conman back with
the Ukash voucher code.
By 5.45pm that afternoon, Ron's colleague Ms Cox has still failed to appear and Ms Slater phoned him again. On this occasion he asked for another 200 in Ukash vouchers and she refused and called the police. Further calls to the fraudulent PPI compensation agent were unanswered.
Ms Slater said the man knew her name and address and phone number, as well as the number of her Argos card:
"I'm disgusted that they could do this," said Ms Slater.
"I'm a single mother who lives alone so it's not money I can afford to lose. They seemed so convincing on the phone - I just want to warn other people not to fall for the same thing."
Local police are warning anyone who receives a phone call about a PPI refund in similar circumstance to contact the police.
