How to Write With a Feather
- 1). Writing with a feather pen is different from writing with a modern pen or even a pencil, partly because you must continually dip your feather into fresh ink to keep writing, but also because you must use far less pressure when writing with a feather pen. Using too much pressure will shorten the life of your feather pen by damaging or wearing down the tip. It will also result in thicker lines and less legible penmanship. To figure out how much pressure you should use when writing with a feather, try drawing small circles on the back of your hand with the pen before using it with ink or paper. This will help you acclimate yourself to the amount of pressure needed to write with a feather pen. You will know you are using the correct amount of pressure when you are able to leave behind slight indentations on your skin without leaving a mark.
- 2). Open the bottle of ink and dip the cut tip of the feather into it.
- 3). Quickly, yet carefully, write on the paper before the ink has a chance to dry on or drip off the tip of the feather. Use the same pressure you did when practicing on your hand. Each time the ink begins to run out, dip the point of the feather into the ink again and go back to writing.
