    Gates Millennium Scholars Program

    • This program provides scholarships to at least 1,000 students of color. Once a scholar is selected, her scholarship funds are automatically renewed each academic year. The money can be applied towards an education at any college or university. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents and have a 3.3 grade point average (GPA) or above. African-American applicants must also show their community service and leadership experience. The program offers personal and professional assistance to all scholars.

Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology

    • Money is available to encourage African-American men and women to enter the science field. One such scholarship is from the Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology (DFBSST). The DFBSST is an endowment that gives money to selected applicants studying science and/or technology-related courses, including engineering and math. As of 2010, the recipient receives $2,000, which is automatically renewed every academic year.

    Congressional Black Caucus Foundation

    • The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is an organization representing all black members of the United States Congress. It also provides numerous fellowships and scholarships to its student members, who are selected for these financial awards. One program requires that candidates have a minimum 2.5 GPA, be U.S. citizens and live in a congressional district represented by a CBC member. The foundation also provides scholarships to two candidates studying environmental science.

    Catharine Lealtad Scholarship

    • At Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., the Catharine Lealtad Scholarship assists students with strong academic records. Given to freshmen, the memorial scholarship is renewed every year as long as the recipients maintain good grades and conduct. No application process is involved; the candidates are selected on the strength of their high school grades. An admissions committee selects worthy students of color for the scholarship. Catharine Lealtad, a late alumna of the college, was the first African-American graduate in 1915, and was made a major during World War II.
