How to Dye Grossgrain Fabric
- 1). Prewash and dry the fabric. Weigh the fabric to be dyed. Round up to the nearest pound.
- 2). Fill the sink, bucket or pot with 3 gallons of hot water for each pound of fabric. Create the dye bath by adding the recommended quantity of powdered or liquid dye for the amount of water. Pre-dissolve the powdered dye as directed by the manufacturer, if necessary.
- 3). Wet the fabric with hot tap water. Wring out the excess water and untwist the fabric. Put on rubber gloves and add the fabric to the dye bath.
- 1). Stir the fabric in the dye bath with a metal spoon for 10 to 30 minutes. Keep the fabric moving constantly, side to side and up and down.
- 2). Rinse the dyed fabric under running water until the water runs clear. Start with warm water and adjust the temperature gradually to cold during the rinsing process.
- 3). Wash the fabric by machine with mild detergent in warm water and rinse well in cold water. Tumble-dry the fabric by machine or hang to dry.
- 4). Clean the sink or bucket and stirring spoon right away with liquid chlorine bleach or chlorine-based cleanser.
