What to Tap For With EFT

One of my biggest mistakes as a newcomer was to waste good time trying to find the exact emotion to tap on instead of just tapping on whatever is there.
I was a trained hypnotherapy, Reiki, and massage practitioner, with very good client intake form skills, and I would within the first 5-10 minutes of meeting the client have all we needed already written down.
But I still searched for exact emotion, probing unnecessarily throughout the session, annoying the client, breaking the flow, and slowing progress.
This is especially so with painful events, where one would just want to clear them as swiftly and easily as possible.
This is why often newcomers are too intimidated to tap for a big issue on their own, as dwelling on all those emotions is just too overwhelming.
And of course, when we are looking into an issue and thinking deeply about what emotions are involved, that is pretty much dwelling on it; and unnecessarily so.
Let us take fear of public speaking.
You may be pleased to find that there is no need for example, to get all worked up whether the emotion is shame or fear of rejection when all that is needed to tap on an event.
In other words, find an event where there was a fear of public speaking, see what you can call it,then just tap for the event.
Let us say this is "When everyone looked at me in yesterday's meeting".
So we can simply call the event "When everyone looked at me in yesterday's meeting" and not dwell on it any further but simply start tapping.
So we can use the following statements.
Setup "Even though I have this feeling about when everyone looked at me in yesterday's meeting, I deeply love and accept myself.
" Reminder "When everyone looked at me in yesterday's meeting.
" All we need to do is to keep repeating this tapping till any intensity of emotion about when everyone looked at us in yesterday's meeting has been neutralized.
Then we can find another such incident, then another, neutralizing them all.
Once we have neutralized several events, they all seem to collapse, so you can rest assured that you do not have to spend the rest of our life collapsing them.
This is called the Generalization Effect, where the tapping on some of a series of memories collapses the whole series; a bit like a cascade of dominoes.
If going straight to an event still feels like too much, then chances are that you are not ready to go to it yet.
In that case, how you are feeling right now is a great tapping subject.
In which case, you can simply tap on "Even though I have this negative feeling, I deeply...
" or if the feeling is easy to identify, then just tap for it.
For example "Even though I'm disappointed,...
" or whatever comes to you.
If you can go straight to a smaller event, that would also be a great help.
Examples of small events include:
  • A time when you said Hello to a friend whilst out shopping and the did not recognize you;
  • When you tried to catch the bus or train recently and you missed it;
  • When your car broke down in the rain;
  • When you were short-changed in a shop;
  • When a driver on the road was rude or inconsiderate;
  • When you bought a pair of shoes you liked only to find they were uncomfortable.
Another great way to tap and usually without too much emotional charge is to tap on any current physical symptoms.
When we tap on these, we also indirectly tap for underlying emotions.
And since this is indirect, it is usually much gentler than tapping on a bad memory.
For words, it is easy.
Simply say for example "Even though I have this pain in my back on the right, I deeply...
" etc.
You may find that current pain or discomfort will shift position as you chase it out of your body.
Rest assured that this is normal; you can keep tapping till it recedes or is gone for now.
Examples of physical tappings in the here and now include:
  • Back pain;
  • Shoulder stiffness;
  • Headache;
  • Blocked nostril or blocked nose
  • An itch in a particular place (be specific where it is).
I hope this has given you ideas of what to tap on and what to say.
