Deed Restricted Composting

    Check the Restrictions

    • While some deed restrictions prohibit any kind of home compost pile, some specify that you may not have any compost piles or obvious bins that violate architectural ordinances or ordinances against trash or waste piles. You may be allowed to construct a wooden bin that matches or blends in with your home's decor, or purchase a decorative bin with a cover that does not resemble the messy pile some people think of when you mention compost.

    Worm Composting

    • In areas where an outdoor compost heap isn't allowable or desirable, you can still compost kitchen scraps by raising worms. Worms process kitchen waste and turn it into castings you can use to enrich soil. A properly managed, covered worm bin produces no odor or pests. You can purchase specially designed worm trays, or raise worms in a plastic bin. Purchase red worms, which will turn paper scraps and kitchen waste into rich compost.

    Direct Composting

    • Instead of putting your kitchen scraps and yard waste into a compost pile to decompose and produce compost, you can practice direct composting. Instead of a compost pile, which your deed restrictions prohibit, bury waste directly in your garden or flower bed. Dig a hole, dump in the waste and cover it up. The material will rot and provide nutrients to the soil. Bury the waste 12 to 14 inches deep and cover it with a layer of soil.

    Community Composting

    • If your neighborhood has deed restrictions against backyard composting, ask your city or town about establishing a community compost bin. If you have a community garden, a compost pile would benefit the garden. Otherwise, a park or municipal recycling center would make a good location for people to bring their kitchen and yard waste to dump into the community compost pile.
