How to Knit a Swirl Hexagon

104 8
    • 1). Cast on 12 stitches onto one of the double-pointed needles. To cast on, tie a basic loop near the tail end of the yarn, slip the needle point through, and pull the knot tight. The slip knot counts as your first cast on stitch. Create the remaining 11 cast on stitches by making a loop in the working yarn near the needle so that the working yarn extends between the working yarn and the needle. Slip the loop onto the needle and pull it tight against the slip knot. Continue making backward loop cast on stitches until you have 12 stitches on the needle.

    • 2). Divide these 12 stitches evenly onto three double pointed needles. You should have four stitches on each needle.

    • 3). Arrange the three needles into a triangle, being careful not to twist the stitches. The working yarn should be on the right needle and the needle with the last cast-on stitch should be on the left.

    • 4). Join the the stitches to form a ring. Do this by inserting the empty double pointed needle into the first stitch on the left needle as if to knit, and knit the stitch. This will join the working yarn extending from the right needle with the first stitch on the left needle, creating a ring.

    • 5). Knit one more stitch and place a stitch marker on your right needle next to the stitch you just made. Continue knitting two stitches and placing a marker all the way around. You should have 12 stitches and 6 markers on your needles.

    • 6). On the next round, start with a yarn over. Do this by by bringing the yarn to the front and over the empty needle and then inserting the needle into the first stitch. Knit each stitch until you reach the marker and then slide the marker to the new needle. Yarn over, knit to the next marker and slide the marker to the new needle. Repeat this increase process on all three needles.

    • 7). Knit every stitch around.

    • 8). Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the hexagon is the size you want.

    • 9). Bind off all stitches around. Do this by knitting two stitches onto the right needle. Use the tip of the left needle to lift the furthest stitch over second stitch and off the needle. Knit another stitch onto the right needle and lift the furthest stitch over the second and off the needle. Continue in this manner until only one stitch remains. Break the yarn and draw the end through the last loop. Pull tight to secure. Weave in the ends.
