    • 1). Lay the rear board flat on the ground. Position the top board against the top end of the rear board and set one of the side boards on top of the side edge of the rear board so the three boards meet. Drill two evenly spaced holes down through the top board into the side board and fasten it with wood screws. Drill six evenly spaced holes down through the top board and into the rear board and join them with wood screws. Attach the board on the other side the same way.

    • 2). Position the main shelf board up against the bottom of the shelf boards, parallel with the top board and with its rear edge flush against the rear board. Drill two holes through each side edge of the main shelf board up and into the side boards. Join the boards with wood screws.

    • 3). Place one of the rear backing boards beneath the main shelf board, parallel to the side boards but exactly 6 inches in from the side of the headboard, so it can accommodate a 6-inch shelf. Predrill two holes down through the main shelf board and into the rear backing board, then attach the boards with wood screws. Repeat on the other side of the headboard.

    • 4). Place the front board on top of the rear backing boards, parallel to the rear board and flush with the underside of the main shelf board. Predrill four holes through the front of the front board and into the rear backing board and join the boards with wood screws. Predrill four holes through the top of the main shelf board and into the front board and join the boards with wood screws.

    • 5). Drill two holes at the desired level in any of the three shelving areas and put pegs in them. Place a shelf board that's been cut to the right size on the pegs, with the level on top, and mark the location on the other side of the shelf area where the shelf is level. Drill two holes at the marked level and insert pegs in them. Set the shelf on the pegs. Repeat as needed for custom shelving at custom heights.
