Lists of Countries that Speak Spanish as Their Main Language
- The only country in Europe where Spanish is the main language is Spain; however, many people in Gibraltar, a British enclave at the southern tip of Spain, also speak Spanish.
- Mexico is the only country in North America that uses Spanish as the official language. In the United States, however, Spanish is increasingly being recognized as the second official language.
- All the countries in Central America speak Spanish except Belize. If you were to travel to Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras or Guatemala, you can expect to speak Spanish.
- In Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, Spanish is the language that is predominantly spoken. Some people on neighboring islands also speak Spanish.
- South America, with the exception of Brazil, is Spanish-speaking. Starting with Venezuela and Columbia in the north and moving down the continent, you can find Spanish being spoken in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.
- The only Spanish-speaking country in Africa is Equatorial Guinea, which is a small country of 10,830 square miles in West Africa. Sebta, a tiny Spanish colony founded in 1640 on the northern tip of Morocco, is also Spanish-speaking.
