Shopaholic City: The 5 Most Popular Malls in Johor Bahru

105 15
One of the main reasons why people book at a Johor Bahru hotel is to go on a shopping expedition at its many malls. While not as glitzy as the ones in neighboring Singapore, these shopping centers are immensely popular among shopaholics and bargain hunters. Among all establishments, these 5 come out on top:

1. KSL City
Opened in December 2010, this 4-story shopping mall is considered as the largest in the city, with 350 stores (including 70 food and beverage outlets) and an 8 cinema screens. Located inside a mixed-use development area, it is only 500 m west from the Jalan Dato Sulaiman/Tebrau Highway junction, open from 10 am to 10 pm.

2. AEON Tebrau City
The second-biggest shopping mall in Johor Bahru, this 3-level complex is dominated by the JUSCO hypermarket and features a wide range of dining establishments. Various international brands, including Giordano and Dorothy Perkins, have also set up shop here. It is located at the junction of Jaland Desa Tebrau and Tebrau Highway, with other branches in Bukit Indah, Permas Jaya, and Taman Universiti.

3. ZON Mall and Department Store
Located at the end of Jalan Ibrahim Sultan and only minutes from Suria City Hotel Johor Bahru, this shopping center is popular for its duty-free specialty outlets. These stores sell chocolate, alcohol, and tobacco products, among others. A supermarket and food court are found at the basement level.

4. City Square
You'd probably even see this before checking in at your hotel. Johor Bahru's most accessible mall, City Square is only a short 5-minute walk from the Customs and Immigration Quarantine (CIQ) building. With 270 stores, a Cathay Cineplex, food court, and free Wi-Fi access in all public areas, this shopping center is definitely a great stop-over. Also open daily from 10 am to 10 pm.

5. Holiday Plaza
While Johor Bahru is popular for bargain goods and duty-free products, it is also notorious as a center of sale for pirated media and counterfeit items. Travelers intrepid enough to buy these items can proceed 600 m west of the Jalan Dato Sulaiman/Tebrau Highway junction. Of course, there's more to Holiday Plaza. A Parkson department store occupies 4 levels of the building, plus a variety of Western fastfood outlets such as McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and KFC.

These are just a sample of the many shopping malls in this border city. With everything on sale here, don't be surprised if you end up hauling bag upon bag of purchases when you return to your Johor Bahru hotel.
