Local tax

Sadly, a good chunk of your money is always reserved for Uncle Sam, right? If it isn't enough that we have to pay federal tax, there are all kinds of local taxes we pay on everything from income to property to ketchup. State income tax, property tax, and sales tax are just a few examples of the local tax we pay!

Isn't federal tax enough? It can feel like the government uses any excuse to tax us with every little local tax, but local tax revenue is used to fund so many places and things we use nearly every day. In fact, the local tax, since the revenue is often put into buildings and services you can use, is probably more useful to you than federal tax!

State income tax is often used to fund state-wide programs, like the public university systems, municipal systems, health care for the underprivileged, and more. That's not such a bad investment, right?

If you're lucky, you might live in one of the seven states with no local state income tax or the other two states with a local state income tax only on dividends. But these states have to get funding for public resources somewhere. Nevada, for example, gets much of its state revenue from its gambling industry.

Property tax is local tax charged on your property by your county that usually partially or completely funds public schools, local libraries, parks, sewer and water systems, parks, and hospitals in your area. Take advantage of any of these services and you're using what you've paid for!

Sales tax is a local tax that likewise funds local amenities such as schools and libraries. Sales tax differs quite a bit from state to state and sales tax is often required to be paid at the end of the year on even out-of-state purchases for which you have paid no sales tax, such as online or catalog orders.

Look at detailed charts and graphs that demonstrate the quarterly summary of local and state tax revenues. Maybe you'll get some ideas and move to a state with cheaper local tax!
