Using Green Sand Filters to Remove Metals From Tap Water

You have probably read about common water filters like diatomaceous earth filters (DE filters) and sand filters, these types of filters are excellent for removing bacteria and large contaminants from pool water.
Unfortunately, these filters cannot soften water and remove chemical contaminants like hydrogen sulfide and iron.
If water has an excessive amount of manganese, for instance, this element may be removed from the tap water in order to ensure that your water will be truly clean and free from harmful chemical contaminants.
To remove these metals from tap water, you need to install a green sand filter.
They work just like any other sand filter; the only difference is that inside the filter is a type of sand that can be saturated with glauconite.
Glauconite is sand that is naturally greenish-blue in color and may be found in sedimentary areas of the sea.
More than one hundred years ago, researchers discovered that this particular mineral had the natural ability to remove metals from water.
Because it effectively removed metals, it was branded a Water Softening Agent.
If you live in a part of the country where the water is normally hard or mineralized all year round, installing a green sand filter may be a wise move.
Installing a green sand type will ensure that your swimming pool always has soft water; swimmers won't have to deal with common side effects of swimming in hard water (e.
g.
itchy skin).
Green sand filters can also help to remove the characteristic "rotten egg" odor that is common with highly mineralized water.
Although many cities and towns usually have high standards when it comes to water, there are times when excessive mineral buildup affects the smell and even appearance of water.
A green sand filter is able to minimize or eliminate these manifestations of hard water by oxidizing and reacting with the various metallic elements previously in the water.
It should be noted, however, that these filters require regeneration once the filter media has become oversaturated with the metals that is supposed to trap and oxidize.
Potassium permanganate is applied in order to ensure optimum performance, especially since the filter is likely to react with several hundred gallons of water at a time.
As a pool owner, it is good to add a small amount of potassium permanganate to the filter media so that your filter does not become over-saturated with the metals and chemicals that have been removed from the water.
The green sand filter is efficient because it also minimizes the amount of iron in water regardless of the water's pH (acidity/alkalinity) level.
If the water in your area has suddenly become discolored by excess iron, installing a filter will eliminate the iron overrun for you.
Now, if you already have a green sand filter, you can increase your filter's efficiency by making sure that your swimming pool's water is within the optimum pH range before turning it on.
The optimum pH range for pool water is 6.
