Hi. I'm Jen from Clay Cafe and I'll be showing you how to take your ceramic piece from start to finish. In this clip I'd like to talk a little bit more about what glaze actually is. Glaze is essentially liquid glass that when painted on the piece and fired becomes a glass shell that covers the entire piece. When talking about glaze it is important to identify the two main types. The first type is the under glaze. Under glaze is generally the more decorative colors that are applied to a piece. And the over glaze is a clear shell that's put over for extra protection and also actually helps the colors become more brilliant. When picking your colors for glaze there is an endless possibility. There are hundreds and hundreds of just plain colors. There are textured glazes, metallics, pearlescent and even glow in the dark.
