Breast Implants - When Should They Be Replaced?

103 13
Many women desire fuller breasts to enhance their figure and boost self confidence.
This can be achieved through breast augmentation, more specifically the insertion of saline or silicone implants.
Insertion of implants can be costly and requires surgery, but in the end most are pleased with the outcome.
Unfortunately, implants don't last forever.
There is no exact deadline or expiration date of implants but there is the likelihood that they will deflate or rupture.
Actually doctors report that in the first ten years after breast augmentation, one in four women return for surgery to replace a failed implant, correct capsular contraction or other unacceptable cosmetic outcomes, resolve other complications, or because they desire a change in size.
On average, silicone last longer than saline.
Saline implants generally last at least ten years and silicone have lasted longer than twenty years.
This may sound discouraging but breast implants are actually designed to last a life time and many women actually do not experience any problems nor do they need them exchanged.
Most doctors suggest that if you are pleased with the size, look, and feel of your breasts, leave them be.
If a problem occurs such as deflating, pain, or an aesthetic deformity appears, then another surgery may be necessary.
Saline implants can deflate and silicone implants can rupture.
It is easy to tell when saline implants deflate because you will notice your breasts becoming smaller within a small time frame.
They may shrink in just few hours or it may take a few days.
Silicone rupturing can be more difficult to detect since breasts gradually shrink.
If you notice a hardening of your breast or a physical deformity, these may also be signs that your silicone implant has ruptured.
If any of these symptoms occur, it is best to consult your board certified plastic surgeon.
They may order an MRI or a mammogram to confirm if any leakage or rupture has occurred and they may suggest that your breast implants be exchanged.
If you are considering breast augmentation, you must be aware that sometimes implants fail or complications occur.
It is impossible to say how long your implants will last; perhaps yours will last your entire life.
However, all patients must be open to other surgeries in the future.
It is also important to remember that even with the possibility of complications or future surgeries, most women still consider breast augmentation worth the trouble and financial cost and are pleased with the results.
