How to Make Shaped Buttons for Sewing
- 1). Preheat your oven as directed by the polymer clay manufacturer's instructions.
- 2). Cover your working surface with a sheet of parchment or wax paper to protect surfaces.
- 3). Break off a small amount of clay and knead well. It will be hard at first, but with working and the warmth of your hands, it will soften and become workable. Knead as much clay as you will need to create your buttons.
- 4). Pinch off a small piece of clay and form into your desired shape and size. Polymer clay does not shrink much when baked, so create the button in the size you want. Use the shaping tools to help you form the shape.
- 5). Form all the desired buttons. You can keep them uniform in shape and size, or vary as you like.
- 6). Smooth off any rough spots from the buttons with your fingertip.
- 7). Lay the buttons at least a few inches apart, evenly spaced, on the baking sheet. Poke two or four holes in each button, using the toothpick, to form sewing holes.
- 8). Bake the buttons on the sheet as directed by the clay manufacturer’s directions. Allow the buttons to cool before handling them.
