How to Build a Dock in the Middle of a Pond

    Building The Frame

    • 1). Measure and cut 4 pieces of the 2-inch by 10-inch lumber, making each one 8 feet long. Form the pieces into a square with your hands. Place a metal corner bracket over one corner and mark the holes. Drill through the wood. Place a washer over the bolt, push the bolt thought the hole and tighten the nut on it with a socket wrench. Repeat for the other bolts on the corner piece and then for the other thee corner pieces until you’ve created the frame for the floating dock.

    • 2). Measure 12 in inches from one of the sides and mark along both the pieces of lumber, so the marks are opposite each other. Measure the distance between the marks. Cut one piece of the 2-inch by 10-inch lumber to length and insert at the marks, using a carpenter’s square to ensure the angle is 90 degrees. Nail in place. Repeat every 12 inches until you have a pattern of joists within the frame.

    • 3). Cut the 1-inch by 6-inch lumber to 8 foot lengths. Starting at one side, lay across the joists (not along the joists) and nail in place, making sure the pieces butt up closely against each other.

    Completing The Dock

    • 1). Turn the floating dock over to expose the underside. Cut the Styrofoam blocks with a saw so they fit snugly inside the frame. Nail in place, being sure to fill the frame with the blocks, as they will give the dock its floatation. Screw one tie down ring to each side of the floating dock.

    • 2). Turn the dock the right way up. Load with four cement blocks, rope and a knife. Float to the desired location in the pond.

    • 3). Draw one end of the rope through the concrete block and knot it. Drop the block over the side, lowering it until it hits the bottom of the pond. Thread the rope through the tiedown ring, tie in place and cut the excess rope. Repeat with the other blocks and tiedown rings so that the floating dock will remain in place in the pond.
