How to Grow Strawberry Plants in a Basket
- 1). Load the baskets 2/3 full with organic potting soil. Organic soil is airier than ordinary potting soil, allowing for better drainage.
- 2). Dig holes for the strawberry plants using your fingers. Remove the plants from their nursery containers and bury one plant in the center of each hole with the graft union (where roots meet the stem) just above the soil line. Space each strawberry plant 6 to 8 inches from the next.
- 3). Pat the soil around the strawberry plants to remove air pockets. Water the soil deeply using a watering can. If you have watered deeply enough, the water will flow through the layers of soil and out the bottom of the basket.
- 4). Hang the basket in a sunny spot that receives at least eight hours of direct sunlight per day. Water the strawberries as needed. You'll know it's time to water your strawberry plants when the top inch of soil dries out.
- 5). Feed the strawberries a tomato fertilizer once flowering begins. Follow the label directions for application methods and amounts. Most strawberries appreciate fertilizing every 10 days.
- 6). Harvest the strawberries as they ripen. Ripe strawberries are bright red, with no white on the outside.
