How to Use a USB Flash Stick to Increase System Memory

USB flash drives are relatively inexpensive storage media. The drives have durable construction and compact design and are handy for when users are away from their personal computers and need to save data--a great value to consumers. Microsoft's Windows operating systems increase the value of a USB drive by making it emulate random access memory (RAM), which is critical to the overall speed of a PC. RAM prices vary from the low-end generics to the high-end brand names. Windows users can substitute USB flash drives to increase the speed of a PC and avoid adding extra RAM.

Instructions
1
Insert the USB flash drive into an available USB port on the computer. Wait for Windows to install drivers and recognize the drive. Listen for sounds and look for alerts that indicate Windows is interacting with the drive. When done, Windows will display an "AutoPlay" dialog box.

2
Click on "Speed up my system" under the "General options" section. Wait for another dialog box to open.

3.Select the "ReadyBoost" tab to the front of the "Properties" dialog box if it is not already selected.

4
Click the radio button next to "Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost."

5
Click the "Apply" and "OK" buttons at the bottom of the dialog box to close it. Close any other open dialog boxes.

Tips & Warnings
If the AutoPlay dialog box does not appear in Step 1, the function may be disabled. Visit Microsoft's Troubleshoot AutoPlay Problems page for information on how to resolve the problem (see Resources).

Not all USB flash drives are capable of working with ReadyBoost. Recent USB flash drives include Microsoft's Windows logo on the drive and packaging advertising compatibility. Visit Grant Gibson's ReadyBoost Compatibility Chart page for drives that have been tested (see Resources).
