How to Make Things out of Old Computers
- 1). Unplug the computer monitor. Turn it over, and remove the base using a screwdriver. Remove any screws holding the case together.
- 2). Carefully pull apart the outer casing. Find the cathode ray tube (CRT) located behind the screen. Determine if the CRT is holding a static charge by connecting the high voltage probe and multimeter to it with the crocodile clip. If the reading on the meter screen is above 0, you will need to discharge the CRT before removing it.
- 3). Discharge the CRT by using the high wattage resistor. Ground the monitor before attempting to discharge it to avoid shock. If you are uncertain about this process, have a professional assist you.
- 4). Remove all the wiring and components inside the monitor. Remove any screws securing components together. Dispose of all wiring and components properly. Disengage the monitor screen from inside the monitor and take it out.
- 5). Wash the interior and exterior of the monitor casing using soapy water and a rag. Allow to dry completely. Reassemble the outer casing by replacing all the removed screws.
- 6). Paint and decorate the monitor casing. Place a blanket inside the monitor.
- 1). Unplug the computer tower. Open the computer tower's outer casing by removing all screws. Use a high voltage probe and multimeter to determine if the tower is holding any electrical charge or static buildup. Discharge the buildup using a high wattage resistor.
- 2). Remove all wiring and components inside the tower casing. Clean the inside of the casing using soapy water and a rag.
- 3). Decide where you want viewing windows for your fish tank. Cut the windows out using a jigsaw. Sand the edges of the windows with metal grade sandpaper to remove any sharp areas.
- 4). Cut six pieces of Plexiglas using the jigsaw to fit inside the tower. Glue the four sides and the bottom of the Plexiglas tank together using PVC cement. Secure the hinge to the top piece of Plexiglas and to one side of the tank using the PVC cement. This will allow the top of the tank to open for feeding, cleaning and maintenance. Allow cement to dry for 24 hours before filling with water.
- 5). Put the computer tower casing back together by replacing any removed screws. Cut off the top of the tower using the jigsaw to create a removable lid to access the tank. Place the tank inside the tower.
