Gas ranges are usually more expensive to buy but are cheaper to run. They heat quickly, and the heat can be easily and accurately adjusted from a simmer to a rolling boil. They come in both freestanding and built-in models with sizes appropriate to space, ranging from small apartments to large homes with spacious kitchens. The widths of gas ranges are standard among major manufacturers.

    Freestanding Ranges

    • Freestanding ranges usually include a single oven and a broiler in a compartment below the burner. They come in widths of 20, 24, 30, 36 and 40 inches. The most common size is 30 inches wide. Larger 40 inch-wide ranges are also available.

    Slide-in Ranges

    • The sides of a slide-in range, also called a drop-in range, are unfinished. A slide-in range is designed to fit tightly between two cabinets. These are commonly 20, 30 or 36 inches wide.

    Separate Cooktop and Ovens

    • A gas oven and the cooktop may be separate, not combined in one unit. In these cases the oven and cooktop may be placed beside, behind or on top of one another. Cooktops are available as narrow as 20 inches, but 30- and 36-inch widths are more common. Wall-mounted ovens come in widths of 24, 27 or 30 inches.

    Commercial Ranges

    • Ranges used in cafes and restaurants often have a larger variety of functions and features. They come in widths ranging from 30 to 60 inches.
