What Is a Citrix Metaframe?
Server Software
Server systems differ from software designed to run on individual computers in how many people are supposed to use it. Servers send data to multiple client computers, whereas personal software is designed to be used by one person at a time on an single machine. By hosting a system on a server, users can access their accounts and perform work from any computer in the facility as well as remotely over the Internet.
Application Hosting
A major function of Citrix Metaframe software is to provide a server based framework for allowing employees to work remotely. This includes a secure environment for both employee login and encrypting data while it is in transit. The administrators of servers using this type of software can configure collaborative software to run through these remote connections. This could be generic software, such as databases, or specialized programs developed for individual companies. Citrix Metaframe is not collaborative software itself, but a system for facilitating remote access.
Hardware Networking
In addition to allowing employees to remotely access software, Citrix Metaframe software also allows these employees to access hardware connected to the company's servers. Server administrators can configure their network to allow employees who are logging in remotely to use a company's printers, external hard drives or other specialized hardware. Network administrators can further specify which remote login accounts can access particular pieces of networked hardware.
End of Life
Software advances like any other piece of technology. Companies need to update their products with more features that are more efficient to stay competitive with newer products on the marketplace. Sometimes this takes the form of software patches and version upgrades. But, at other times, the company replaces one product with a completely redesigned one. This was the case with Citrix Metaframe. It has since been replaced with a new product called Citrix XenApp, which serves the same basic functions as Citrix Metaframe with additional support for new virtualization technologies.
