Microsoft Office 2000 Professional is actually several applications--called a "suite--in one, consisting of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel, and Access. If you wish to use any of these programs, you will need to make sure that your computer meets the minimum operating requirements needed to run them. Fortunately, because of the age of this particular suite of programs, there shouldn't be too much difficulty in meeting the requirements.

    Processor Requirements

    • Any program, regardless of what type or when it was made, will have a very specific minimum requirements when it comes to the type of CPU--central processing unit--it needs. If this requirement is not met, the program may run slow, encounter various glitches and technical failures, or may not run at all. Microsoft Office 2000 requires a computer with a Pentium I 166mhz or higher CPU. This will be no trouble at all to meet for today's machines.

    Operating System

    • It should come as little surprise that a suite of applications produced by Microsoft requires a Microsoft operating system to work properly. Office 2000 needs any of the Microsoft operating systems from Windows 95 on up to run.

    RAM Requirements

    • RAM (Random Access Memory), is memory available to be used by computer programs to store data. Generally, the more RAM a computer has, the faster a program will run on it. Microsoft Office 2000 requires a minimum of 128mb to function properly, plus an extra 4mb for every program being run concurrently. With computers usually coming with gigabytes or more of memory these days, this requirement will not be difficult at all to meet.

    Space Requirements

    • Because programs are almost always installed onto a computer's program rather than run directly off of whatever media--CDs, DVDs or floppy disks, they come packaged on, there will always be a minimum amount of spaced required to be free on your hard drive. Microsoft Office 2000 requires at least 217MB free for the basic programs, plus another 174MB free if you wish to install Microsoft Publisher and the small business tools that are included in the application suite.
