How to Paint Over Timber

    Preparation

    • 1). Sand varnished timber until it appears dull. An incorrect sanding technique will cause splintering. Avoid splintering by sanding with the timber wood grain.

    • 2). Wash exterior timber with a pressure washer. Wipe interior timber with tack cloths.

    • 3). Cover the area beneath the timber with canvas drop cloths.

    Application

    • 1). Coat bare timber with latex primer, using a roller. Touch up skipped areas of the timber with a nylon brush. If the timber is stained, coat it with shellac primer, using a china brush. Let the timber dry for two hours.

    • 2). Wash tools used to apply latex primer with water. Wash tools used to apply shellac primer with denatured alcohol.

    • 3). Coat the timber with latex paint, using the roller. Touch up skipped areas of the timber with the nylon brush. Finish exterior timber with acrylic latex paint. Let the timber dry for two hours.
