My son's allergies and ear problems have been troublesome since the day he was born.

We never left the house without tissues because he constantly needed his nose wiped.  He suffered so many ear infections that it seemed he spent his first years on antibiotics. Eventually, my son’s pediatrician referred us to an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Searching for a Cure

My son has since had ear tube surgery five times.

In addition, thinking it might help, we had his adenoids removed.

The doctor assured us my son would outgrow his ear troubles around the age of five.  Age five came and went, as did six and seven.

Every time we saw a doctor of any kind, he had either another infection or fluid on his ears.

More Serious Discoveries

When my son was about three years old, I began to notice his allergies and ear troubles were not the only issue.  He had breathing trouble as well.

I learned that asthma is, for some, an allergic disease.

Our pediatrician referred us to an allergist. Breathing tests determined my son suffered from asthma.

Then the doctor performed a skin test to determine what was causing the allergies. The results were immediate and alarming. My son was highly allergic to nearly every allergen they tested.

A Hopeful Solution

The doctor promised hope, but no miracles. He told us allergy shots can potentially decrease allergic reactions over time and, in some cases, even minimize them to such a degree that breathing can become normal.

However, in other cases, there is no improvement at all.

The allergy shot treatment, or immunotherapy, combines a variation of weekly and monthly shots for about three years. My husband and I agreed to give this a try.

We were desperate for help. We stripped carpet from three rooms in our home to prevent allergens from settling in it.  We tried, unsuccessfully, to give our furry pets a new home. I vigorously cleaned our house to create the best environment for my asthmatic son.

Based on the doctor’s recommendation, I was administering about six medications to my son, some of which had serious side effects. I was emotionally distraught about his illnesses.  The Lord showed me I wore this emotional burden like a heavy cape.

Giving the Battle to God

The Lord then showed me that I needed to let go of this burden I was carrying for my son. He told me this was not my fight. This was my son’s battle against evil, and the Lord and his angels would fight it.

I realized that my worrisome attitude had nearly turned into a state of depression and was not helping anything.  Visually, I let go of the burden. I envisioned myself laying my son’s illness at the foot of the cross.

After enduring immunotherapy for one year, the allergist announced he was disappointed in the lack of progress with my son’s allergies and asthma.

He began discussing other treatment options. Without regard for the allergist’s devastating news, we continued the shots and remained hopeful.

Perseverance in Prayer

My son and I prayed for healing of his ears, allergies, and asthma every night. One night, my son said we should give up because it was not working. At that moment, I sensed the Lord’s words falling from my lips, "We have to keep praying. You never know if this will be the day you will be healed."

Four months later, my son saw his ear doctor for the last time. He said there was no fluid or infection in either ear.

A few months later, the allergist said the results of his breathing test were 101% and recommended we stop all medication.

A few months later, the allergist tested his breathing again.  My son’s asthma was completely under control without the use of any medication.

Tears of Joy

We plan to complete the final year of immunotherapy as advised. I have been the only one reaching for a tissue lately, and that is to dry my tears of joy.

The Lord took up my burden. He and his angels helped my son conquer ear problems, allergies, and asthma.
