Step-by-Step for Drawing a Lighthouse

    • 1). Draw two tall lines sloping slightly inward. They should be of equal length and be drawn going vertically. Essentially, the goal is to draw the outside shape of the lighthouse and its base. Follow the general sloping tall side of a cylinder that spreads wider as it reaches the bottom. To help with the concept, imagine drawing a candle the gradually gets fatter toward the ground.

    • 2). Draw two curving lines which cap the top and bottom of the lighthouse. These curves are the top and the base of the structure. Start the arc from one point of the tall, sloping lines and curve over to the other line. Repeat this for the base, which is the lighthouse's ground level.

    • 3). Draw the cap the lighthouse. The top of a lighthouse is basically a cap, which could be rounded like a half-circle or flat like an upside-down pail. If using the half-circle rounded top, draw a full circle at the top of the lighthouse and erase the bottom of the circle. This will give the structure a rounded rooftop. If going for the flat roof, draw an upside-down pail shape instead.

    • 4). Draw the details of the lighthouse. Lighthouses typically have brick surfaces. Start with one brick and then place another small rectangular brick atop the first brick's middle and off to the side. Repeat with additional bricks until either the entire lighthouse is covered or only sporadic areas giving the indication that the structure is bricked. Use small rectangles on the top of the lighthouse for windows. Drawing the light can be as simple as placing a circle either atop the lighthouse's roof or inside the domed top.

    • 5). Include items in the background. Drawing items such as water, boats or birds can give more realism and life to the sketch. Place boats in the water with sails. For boats in the distance, use a basic capital M shape for their design. Birds can be drawn as capital Vs from a distance. Water can be drawn with a flat horizontal line filled with sporadic ripples -- upside down lower-case Vs -- showing a moving, liquid surface.
