Popcorn - The Healthy Snack
Some of the health benefits of popcorn are:
- Popcorn hulls are rich in fiber. These are among the few foods that are least or not processed, which helps in keeping all the nutrients safe. Popcorn is a wholegrain and is eaten in that form only.
- It is loaded with calories as well.
- Popcorn has abundant resources of polyphenols. Polyphenols are strong antioxidants and responsible for protecting body from various dangerous diseases and conditions. Polyphenols are thought to be much more potent antioxidants than vitamin c and vitamin e. These antioxidants provide several important health benefits such as protection from coronary artery disease, protection from cancers, healthy blood sugar levels and prevention from premature aging.
- It has ferulic acid, which is an antioxidant that has shown a wide range of therapeutic effects against cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and neuro-degenerative diseases (Alzheimer's) largely because of its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
- Popcorn has abundant amount of iron phosphorous and calcium. Popcorn also supplies calcium…not so much as milk, the greatest of all calcium producers, but still more than many other producers, but still more than many other foods. The red corpuscles of the blood must have iron, and teeth and bones must phosphorous and calcium. Popcorn is a great source of these minerals.
- The human body is forever building. It builds during youth when limbs and frame grow larger. After maturity, it rebuilds, replacing its worn-out tissues with new. To do this vastly important work, the body must have proteins to feed nitrogen to the cells. Proteins are not stored by the body, but must be supplied every day. Popcorn have decent amount of proteins.
- Popcorn is good source of vitamins like niacin, thiamine and riboflavin, which are required by the body to sustain proper health. It lacks in vitamin A and C, which are thought to be destroyed in popping process as sweet corn has abundant amount of vitamin A and C.
Use only air popped popcorns and not greasy buttered spicy ones. Being oily and spicy destroys all the necessary nutrients and makes it unhealthy by adding to the cholesterol. One should also eat other vegetables and fruits too and should not be dependant only on popcorn for nutrients.
