Scottish Premier League Preview: Motherwell Vs St Mirren

103 14
This Scottish Premier League game is due to kick off at 19:45 GMT, on Wednesday 23 February 2011, hosted at Fir Park, Motherwell.
With two straight wins under their belt since the 6-0 humiliation at Ibrox, Motherwell are in much better heart and will look to extend their winning run to three games when they welcome a despondent St Mirren outfit now adrift with Accies at the bottom of the league.
A win for the Steelmen will see them return to their earlier season promise.
St Mirren have yet to record a league win 2011, their only successes this year being in the Scottish Cup against lower-league opposition Ayr United and Peterhead.
Their already fragile confidence will have taken a beating too following Saturday's defeat at home to Hibs' late, late 87th-minute goal.
So how is Wednesday's game likely to go? We would be able to predict the outcome of this match with greater precision and accuracy if we took a look at how these two sides have fared in the recent past.
That should give us an idea of their current form going into the coming game, and a better indication as to the result you can expect from it.
Motherwell's last 5 game record reads...
[Motherwell's score first] 19 February Home 1-0 vs Hamilton Academical 15 February Away 2-1 vs Aberdeen 12 February Away 0-6 vs Rangers 5 February Away 2-0 vs Stranraer (Scottish Cup) 2 February Home 0-1 vs Kilmarnock St Mirren's last 5 game record reads...
[St Mirren's score first] 20 February Home 0-1 vs Hibernian 12 February Home 3-3 vs Inverness Caledonian Thistle 5 February Away 2-1 vs Ayr United (Scottish Cup) 2 February Away 0-2 vs Hibernian 26 January Home 1-1 vs Dundee United Note: In analysing the current form of these two teams, I have taken into account their most recent games, irrespective of whether these were in the Scottish Premier League or not.
You can assume that all of the above matches took place in the Scottish Premier League, except where I have specified otherwise, in the brackets.
St Mirren are a pretty poor imitation of their previous seasons' selves.
It is still not clear why they got rid of their previous manager Gus McPherson who seemed to be doing as well as could be, and replaced him with novice ex-Cowdenbeath manager Danny Lennon, who is toiling at this level.
There's no reason to suppose Motherwell won't continue their fine form and there's no reason to suppose St Mirren will suddenly offer them a real challenge.
Comfortable evening for Motherwell.
More misery for St Mirren.
