Can't climb hills on your Trikke? Don't despair! With patience, practice, and determination, you can make your Trikke scooter tackle even the steepest hill.
Here are some tips that will help you achieve your goal...
First, you have to ask yourself several questions.
Have you already mastered the basic concepts of Trikke-ing? Can you "rock and roll" without concentrating too much on your moves when you ride your Trikke scooter? If the answer is no then you are rushing yourself.
You are not yet ready to attempt Trikke-ing uphill.
Remember that the first thing you have to learn in Trikke-ing is the basic skills of riding on flat ground.
Without such skills, you will never be able to nail down more advanced techniques.
Hill climbing on your Trikke scooter is one of the most difficult challenge you will face when Trikke-ing.
It therefore requires practice, practice and did I mention? More practice.
For very slight inclines, greatly increasing your Trikkes speed prior to reaching the slope can help propel you over it.
However, higher and steeper slants require wider carving movement with quick turns instead of straight thrusts.
Because of the effect of gravity, your Trikke scooter tends to slow down dramatically as you begin to ascend.
To prevent your Trikke from rollng backwards or completely stopping, you have to make continuous wide swerving pushes on your Trikke handlebars in an outward then forward direction alternately towards the right then left with your weight leaning slightly in the same direction.
You also have to kick your right foot outward then forward simultaneously when making a left swerving push followed by a left foot kick together with the right arm push.
This is similar to the basic Trikke-ing skills that you should be familiar with by now.
Only this time, you have to increase the strength of your upper body movement to drive your Trikke sideways in a wider curve.
After the wide sideways move, sharply twist your entire body to quickly turn ("punch") the Trikke handlebars opposite to the direction you're leaning.
The timing of this punch is essential to increase your forward momentum.
Experts describe this technique as a "series of rapid punching motions to force the Trikke front wheel around in order to gain a few more feet of pavement".
The steeper the hill, the tighter your turns on the Trikke scooter need to be.
If you feel your front wheel dragging as you do your switch backs, just turn your wheel a bit sharper as you go back and forth.
This problem will eventually disappear with practice.
In addition, some find it better to reduce the height of their Trikke handlebar to the lowest position before climbing a big hill to give their upper body more momentum in swerving and punching.
You have to practice this technique on flat ground first until you feel comfortable before applying it to inclines to increase your chances of success.
We recommended that you start out slow and work your way up to higher and steeper hills as your riding skills increase.
Hill climbing on your Trikke scooter is definitely difficult, but ultimately, achievable.
The key to success is simple perseverance and determination.
If you keep at it, you'll get the hang of it.
The sense of satisfaction when you finally climb your Trikke uphill is worth all the frustration and difficulties you might suffer.
And you can then label yourself an experienced rider, on your way to becoming a revered "Trikke Master.
