How to Change the Battery in a Brinks Alarm

    • 1). Call the Brinks customer service line and ask them to put your system "on test." The contact number is 800-445-0872. Operators are available to assist you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Putting your system "on test" will prevent emergency services from responding to the security systems alarm, which may transmit while you are changing the battery.

    • 2). Locate the master control panel, a metal box generally in an out-of-the-way and hard-to-see spot. If you are not sure where the master panel is, start by looking in the basement of the home, and in large closets.

    • 3). Disconnect the main power source to the master control unit. Smaller units have an AC adapter that plugs into a wall outlet. If this is the power unit on your system, simply unplug the adapter. Larger units are often hardwired into the home's electrical circuits. If this is the power unit on your system, go to the breaker box and turn of the breaker that controls the master panel.

    • 4). Open the control panel. On a small unit, the door screws shut with Phillips head screws. Disconnect the front panel and remove it. On a larger unit, the system door may be held on by a locking mechanism. If this is the case, unlock it and remove the front cover.

    • 5). Locate the battery. It is a large black box with two wires attached to the top.

    • 6). Remove the red and black cables that come out of the master panel circuitry and attach the battery. The leads slide onto flat posts on top of the battery and can be removed by pulling gently away from the post.

    • 7). Remove and dispose of the old battery. Contact a waste management center to find out how battery disposal is handled in your area.

    • 8). Place the new battery in the battery compartment inside the master panel box.

    • 9). Slide the red and black wires onto the battery posts. Hook the correct cables up to the post that matches its polarity. The red wire connects to the post marked with a plus sign. Connect the black lead to the post marked with a negative sign.

Replace the cover on the master panel. When you set it into position, line up the screw holes exactly.

    • 11

Replace the screws in a small panel, or lock the key in a large panel, to close the panel and hold the door in position.

    • 12

Plug the master panel back into the wall, or turn on the breaker. This restores power to the home security system.

    • 13

Call Brinks customer service back and have them take the system off test mode.

    • 14

Reset the clock on the alarm system. Hold the "0" key down until the keypad's display goes blank. It should take about 10 seconds. The clock will reset automatically from the Brinks network.

    • 15

Press the "On" key and arm the system.
