How to Use Clay Soil
- 1). Dig up the garden area with a shovel or rototiller several days after a rain and before the ground becomes too dry but is not wet. Remove all grass, weeds and rocks.
- 2). Cover the garden area with 1 inch of organic manure using the shovel and wheelbarrow.
- 3). Cover the manure with agricultural lime at a ratio of 10 lbs. for every 100 square feet of garden using the shovel and wheelbarrow.
- 4). Dig to a depth of 8 inches with the shovel to distribute the manure and lime through the clay soil.
- 5). Cover the amended clay soil with topsoil to a depth of 8 inches.
