How to Build a Window Flower Box
- 1). Determine the size of the box your window can hold (length, width and depth) and decide on a type of wood to use. Be sure to choose wood that can withstand the changing elements, like a pressure-treated redwood.
- 2). Cut out the pieces to your window box using the dimensions you obtained in Step 1.
- 3). Lay the bottom piece of wood onto a flat surface. Place the back of the window box flush against the back edge of the bottom piece and temporarily secure with a single nail or staple.
- 4). Place one side of the window box inside the back piece, making sure the joint is even and solid. When you have achieved a perfect angle, nail the pieces together. Repeat the same process with the other side.
- 5). Put the front section of the window box into place opposite the back. Square the corners and joints and then nail the piece into place.
- 6). Turn the widow box over with the temporarily secured bottom on top. Square the corners and joints and then nail the bottom of the window box into place.
- 7). Sand away any and all rough edges until the box is perfectly smooth on all sides. If desired, attach a finished piece of finish molding around the top of the box to give it a more polished look.
- 8). Stain or paint the box the color desired. Finish off with a protective clear acrylic coating that is resistant to the elements.
- 9). Drill a few small holes into the bottom of the box for drainage.
